Governor-General disses David Thompson and new DLP Government

The Governor-General of Barbados has dissed David Thompson and distanced himself from the opening of Parliament on Tuesday when the new DLP government outlines its policies.

In our opinion, it sends a strong message to Thompson and the DLP after their first act of wickedness and abuse of power in dismissing four junior public workers at the Urban Development Commission on Friday.

We have no problem with changing the big boys when government changes power, but sending home ordinary small workers is an act of abomination which stinks like hell. Governor-General Sir Clifford Husbands is right to have nothing to do with people who have committed this act of wickedness.

Belgrave acting as G-G

RETIRED HIGH COURT JUDGE Elliott Belgrave will perform the role of Governor-General when Parliament opens on Tuesday with the new government Barbadians voted into power on January 15.

Justice Belgrave’s duties on that day will include reading the Throne Speech that will outline the policies of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration of Prime Minister David Thompson.

Governor-General Sir Clifford Husbands is indisposed and will not be involved in the largely ceremonial affair.

Tomorrow Justice Belgrave will swear in Independent Senator, Sir Roy Trotman who was out of the country when other senators took their oaths before Sir Clifford.

Under Section 29 of the Barbados Constitution, whenever the Office of Governor-General is vacant or the holder of the office is absent from Barbados or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his office, those functions shall be performed -

a. by any person for the time being designated by Her Majesty in that behalf who is in Barbados and able to perform those functions; or

b. at any time when there is no person in Barbados so designated and able to perform those functions, by the holder of the office of Chief Justice; or

c. at any time referred to in paragraph (b) when the office of Chief Justice is vacant or the holder thereof is absent from Barbados or is for any other reason unable to perform those functions, by the President of the Senate.

Since the President of the Senate has not yet been named, the retired justice is the person who was been chosen to act.

Justice Belgrave has sat on several commissions including the recently concluded Glendairy Prison Fire Inquiry, and the probe into the prison breaks of Winston Hall. (WB)
